A Bird in the Hand
Taking refuge from the heat of summer on a Brooklyn rooftop, on a day much like this, Aaron Wojack came across a millennia-old tradition. Trained pigeons have been raised by humans for over 3000 years, and one of the rare remaining strongholds for the sport of pigeon flying can be found in New York City.
Overlooking the borough I started to notice people on the roofs tending to coops and flying groups of birds. Over time, as I trained my eye I began to notice them all over… The unique architecture of the coops and beauty of the rhythmic flight inspired me to seek out the stewards of the sport. The series is a work in progress, that aims to culminate in a book and gallery exhibition.
